Societi

When I first noticed the Societi sign going up on {Orange} Street in Gardens, I thought they had branched out, not relocated. I couldn’t understand how one would give up such a strategic position at the V&A Waterfront. But, considering the rentals at the Waterfront, understanding the move becomes a lot easier.

And it isn’t as if they have moved to a bad location. On the contrary, the reputedly haunted house is a great building which is more in the character of the menu, if that makes any sense. The menu is still the same styled fare which represents excellent value for money.  The slick, personable service makes one feel immediately at home, which is a great feeling wherever you are in the world. …/2

My choice of starter was a salad, which proved to be too marinated in dressing to be thoroughly enjoyable. Being a butternut salad, it was rich to start with and became slightly cloying after a few mouthfuls. Their Cesar salad, however, is heavenly and comes highly recommended.

The French Vietnamese pork belly as a main was sublime. I am a sucker for well cooked, succulent pork and this really hit the spot perfectly. It is a rich dish, but is just the thing for a cold Cape winter’s day. The sirloin was slightly not quite as good as the pork belly, but passable. The moutard sauce didn’t excite my taste buds and I would probably not choose it again. That is not to say it was bad, but somehow it missed the mark for me. I am certain there are numerous others who approve of it. …/3

Oh the sadness I feel now the panacotta with grappa is no longer on the menu. It was a dessert I would drive miles for. Not being one who is always having a sweet, this is one of those desserts that, no matter how much you have eaten, needs to be ordered. I can only thank the chef for saving my waistline this winter!  The lemon tart and baked cheesecake were excellent, but will always remain a distant option should the panacotta make a welcome return.

Probably the greatest thing about the staff is the fact that they are so accommodating to children. Our son, a robust and active 16-month old, was made to feel welcome and that always eases a parent’s anxiety of eating out with the little people.

The new premises in Gardens is a winner and we are definitely going to continue to be regulars.
