BMW is once again defining a brand-new segment in the automobile market. What that segment is, is still under consideration. It is an extension of the 5 series, but quite unlike the other offerings in the grouping, or indeed any other.
Similar in shape to the X6, higher than the standard format 5 series, but not as high as the X5, this car is a conundrum. But it is one that I like.
As with the X6, I think it exciting that BMW is taking risks and creating new styles of cars rather than just sticking to what we all expect. What we can expect, however, is the same attention to detail, ride quality and superb finishes. A part hatchback, part SUV and part saloon, BMW is once again breaking moulds and setting standards.
It will be interesting to see if any other manufacturers jump at the newly created segment as they did when the X5 was launched.
