As amusing as these encounters may be, every now and then a story comes along that surpasses the adjective “amusing”. It’s the kind of story that is hilarious because the plan went awry and no one was actually hurt. It’s the kind of story that should be made into one of those slapstick action comedies. Of course I’m referring to the story in the news over the last week about the Matric student from KZN that tried to hire a hitman (who was actually an undercover cop) to kill her ex-boyfriend’s mother. Now there’s a slapstick action comedy I would see. Starring Christina Ricci as Brittany Mitchell, because she has that weird, obsessive vibe going on. Crazy eyes. And, of course, Bruce Willis as the undercover cop. Imagine the trailer for that film.

Living in South Africa never fails to amuse me. While the crime in this country is as extraordinary as it is serious, sometimes we need to look at the amusing side of it. It’s a coping mechanism. Complaining about crime has become par for the course, and on occasion even an enjoyable pastime. Swapping stories of getting mugged is nearly as fun as discussing whether Jen and Brad are going to get back together, providing you survived the encounter unscathed. I’ve heard some pretty cool stories, one including getting held up with a shotgun. And of course in return I’ve shared some of my own crime victim anecdotes, including once punching a mugger in the face, and another time telling a mugger (with a huge knife) that it was an invasion of privacy to look in my handbag. Yeah, I know. Sometimes I’m not so bright.
You can’t make this shit up. This is why the best films are art imitating life. And sometimes life imitates life, no matter how stupid it is. When I logged onto news24 this morning, there was yet another story of a failed attempt to hire a hitman. This time a man tried to hire someone to kill his own mother in order to get her life insurance. Unfortunately for him he hired a hitman with a conscience, and instead of killing the mother, he told her what her son was up to. Maybe this could be turned into a franchise like The Fast and The Furious, or Saw.
